### Summary
**About the Position:** This position serves as Master of diesel-powered motor vessel (towboat) approximately 85 feet in length, up to 2,560 horsepower, twin-screw, normally operating on the Upper Mississippi River, Illinois Waterway, and navigable tributaries within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District.

### Responsibilities
* Operate a twin screw pusher type towboat of up to 2, 560 horsepower to tow and/or maneuver a variety of floating plant units engaged in maintenance, painting, and repair of navigation structures.
* As appropriate you will be responsible for the direction of personnel involved in vessel upkeep and mechanical maintenance, safe working and operating practices, vessel and plant security, daily log maintenance, and related administrative activities.

* Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
* Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements.
* A medical examination is required. If selected, satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.
* Subsequent annual physical exams are required for this position.
* Must possess and maintain a valid state issued driver's license.
* Normal work schedule for work week is 4 days at 10 hours per day.
* Must possess and maintain a U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing Vessels upon Western Rivers Merchant Mariners License.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Master Towboat without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element applicants should document experience and/or show the ability to do the following tasks: Operating a towboat to maneuver floating plant on short and long range tows, move and position plant units engaged in maintenance and repair activities and assisting in making repairs to machinery and equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

* **Physical Efforts:**Work involves exerting continual moderate to heavy effort in operating boat or equipment controls to continually adjust or maneuver as required. Heavy effort is also required when making repairs. Is subject to strain caused by vibrations, jerking, or jolting, etc., and occasionally, moves objects weighing over 50 pounds.
* **Working Conditions:**During boat operation, is normally within the confines of a pilot house which protects from the elements and can be heated. Is exposed to traffic hazards, especially during inclement weather or decreased visibility. When making repairs to the boat, is exposed to injuries resulting from working around, moving machinery, and in cramped quarters. When working on a deck, is exposed to all weather conditions typically of the area. at times, is exposed to unpleasant heat, fumes, and noise associated with large engines. Is exposed to injuries associated with boat operating and decking, such as equipment overturn, falling into hazardous water, etc., for which prescribed safety gear and practices, such as hard hat, life preservers, etc., are required.
